Setup in brief

Install the official Pinterest app from the Shopify App Store → connect your Pinterest Business account → verify domain claim → enable catalog sync. The app installs the tag, fires standard events, and syncs your product catalog automatically. Setup takes under 30 minutes. Verify with Pinterest Tag Helper and check Catalogs in Pinterest Business Hub before launching ads.

What the Pinterest Shopify Integration Does

The Pinterest for Shopify app (official app by Pinterest) handles three critical integrations in one install:

1. Domain claim

Automatically adds the Pinterest verification meta tag to your theme. Required before catalog ads can run.

2. Pinterest tag

Installs base tag + standard events (PageVisit, ViewCategory, AddToCart, Checkout) automatically. No manual code required.

3. Product catalog

Syncs your Shopify products to a Pinterest catalog daily. Price changes, stock updates, and new products sync automatically.

Setup Walkthrough

1

Install Pinterest for Shopify

Shopify Admin → Apps → Shopify App Store → search "Pinterest" → install the app by Pinterest (verified blue badge). Click "Add app" → Authorize.

2

Connect Pinterest Business account

Follow the prompts to log in and connect. Select your Business account (not personal). If you don't have a Business account, create one at business.pinterest.com before this step.

3

Verify domain claimed

Pinterest Business Hub → Settings → Claimed accounts → your domain should show "Verified." If not, manually add the meta tag to your Shopify theme (Online Store → Themes → Edit Code → theme.liquid → paste in <head> section).

4

Verify tag firing

Pinterest Ads Manager → Conversions → Events Manager. Visit a few pages on your store. Within 10–15 minutes, PageVisit events should appear as "Active." Use the Pinterest Tag Helper Chrome extension for real-time verification.

5

Enable catalog sync

In the Pinterest app: Catalog tab → Connect catalog → Confirm. Products sync within a few hours. Check Pinterest Business Hub → Catalogs → your catalog → Feed status.

6

Launch campaigns

Once catalog status is Active, launch your first shopping campaign in Pinterest Ads Manager. See the full catalog ads guide →

Common Shopify-Pinterest Issues

Tag fires on product pages but not checkout

Cause: Shopify's checkout uses a different domain (checkout.shopify.com) that the basic tag install doesn't cover.

Fix: Enable the Pinterest tag in Shopify's Checkout settings. In Shopify Admin → Settings → Checkout → Additional scripts, add the Pinterest tag checkout event manually. Alternatively, use Shopify's Customer Events (Shopify 2.0 themes) for checkout-page tracking.

Duplicate tag events firing

Cause: Pinterest app installed, AND Pinterest tag also added manually via theme or GTM.

Fix: Remove duplicate. If using the Shopify app, remove any manual tag implementations. Check via Pinterest Tag Helper — if you see events firing twice, there's a duplicate.

Catalog sync not showing products

Cause: Products not published to the Online Store channel, storefront password active, or products missing required fields (no price, no images, not active).

Fix: Check all products are Published → Online Store. Remove storefront password if testing. Ensure all products have images and prices set.

ROAS showing as 0 in Pinterest Ads Manager

Cause: Checkout event not being tracked. Pinterest can track clicks but not conversions without the checkout event.

Fix: Verify checkout events in Events Manager. Place a test order and check if a Checkout event appears within 24 hours. If not, the checkout tracking is broken — use the fix above.

Theme update breaks tag

Cause: Shopify theme update overwrites custom code or breaks app integrations.

Fix: After any major theme update, re-verify the Pinterest tag is firing. The Pinterest app should survive most updates automatically, but check Events Manager after updates.

Shopify-Specific Optimization Tips

Use Shopify collections as product groups

Your Shopify collections (Furniture, Rugs, Lighting) can map directly to Pinterest product groups. The native app may not expose this — use a feed management app to create product group rules that match your collection names.

Sale price from compare-at price

Set "Compare at price" in Shopify product variants for any product that's on sale. The Pinterest integration automatically maps this to the sale_price field in your feed, showing strikethrough pricing in shopping ads.

Product tags for custom labels

Shopify's product tags can be mapped to feed custom labels via a feed management app. Tag your bestsellers with "bestseller", high-margin products with "high-margin" in Shopify — then map these tags to Pinterest's custom_label fields for campaign segmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Pinterest Shopify app automatically handle checkout conversion tracking?

Partially. The app installs the base tag and most standard events, but checkout events are tricky because Shopify's checkout uses a separate domain. If checkout events are not firing in Events Manager, add the Pinterest tag manually to Shopify's checkout settings, or use Customer Events on Shopify 2.0 themes for checkout-page tracking.

Why is my Pinterest catalog not syncing with Shopify after installing the app?

The most common causes: (1) Shopify storefront password is active — Pinterest cannot access your feed if the store is password-protected; (2) Products are not published to the Online Store channel; (3) Products are missing required fields (no price, no images, not active). Check Pinterest Business Hub → Catalogs → your catalog → Feed status for the specific error.

Should I use the Pinterest Shopify app or a manual feed URL?

Start with the Pinterest Shopify app for easiest setup. Switch to a manual feed URL via DataFeedWatch or Simprosys when you need keyword-optimized title rewrites, all product images (not just the first), custom label mapping, or granular material and pattern attributes. The native app is sufficient for most stores under 500 SKUs with basic catalog structure.
